Type IC fixtures are designed to be installed in such a way that they may have insulation directly in contact with them. So on a non-IC type we must have a 1/2 inch space from any recessed parts to combustibles, excluding the support or finish trims. Recepta cles, connectors, and attachment plugs shall be of a listed grounding type rated 15 or 20 amperes. for a fluorescent luminaire (fixture). Portable Handlamps. Individual showcases, other than fixed, shall be permitted to be connected by flexible cord to permanently installed receptacles, and groups of not more than six such showcases shall be permitted to be coupled together by flexible cord and separable locking-type connec tors with one of the group connected by flexible cord to a permanently installed receptacle. 410.52 Conductor Insulation. Luminaires shall be constructed, installed, or equipped with shades or guards so that combustible material is not subjected to temper atures in excess of 90C (194F). Professional. Open-Circuit Voltage Exceeding 300 Volts. Parts that must be removed for lamp replacement shall be hinged or held captive. Canopies and outlet boxes taken together shall provide sufficient space so that luminaire conductors and their connecting devices are capable of being installed in accordance with 314.16. Bases, Incandescent Lamps. The switch or circuit breaker shall be located within sight from the luminaires or lamps, or it shall be permitted to be located elsewhere if it is lockable in accordance with 110.25. Integral Thermal Protection. Article 110 of the National Electrical Code (NEC) covers the general requirements for the examination and approval, installation and use, access to, and spaces about electrical equipment. Exception No. Additional Requirements. Support. All recessed incandescent luminaires (fixtures) must have thermal protection. These are the 10 NEC Article 410 items we deem most important, based on the pervasiveness of confusion and the potential costs of same. Conductors shall be arranged so that they are not subjected to tempera tures above those for which they are rated. Another requirement is that track fittings are not to be equipped with general purpose receptacles, which would make them more like a branch circuit. No solder shall be used in the construction of a luminaire recessed housing. Luminaires Near Combustible Material. Im not going to cover every one of these items in detail, but please be aware that units installed in wet or damp locations have to be listed for the appropriate location and should prevent water from entering a wiring compartment. from combustible material and at least 75 mm (3 in.) Adequate airspace shall be provided between lamps and shades or other enclosures of combustible material. Exception No. (D) Bathtub and Shower Areas. Five exceptions exist in the 2011 Code, so please review. A metal pole shall be provided with an equipment grounding terminal as follows: A pole with a handhole shall have the equipment grounding terminal accessible from the handhole. This often leads to problems, such as when we have special luminaires used inside casinos, hotels and other large facilities where the units are actually a piece of artwork with lights attached. D4(b) Optional Calculation for Multifamily Dwelling, Example No. Thermal protection shall not be required in a recessed high-intensity discharge lumin aire identified for use and installed in poured concrete. Parts of the luminaire exposed within the hood shall be corrosion resistant or protected against corrosion, and the surface shall be smooth so as not to collect deposits and to facilitate cleaning. All luminaires installed in wet locations shall be marked, Suitable for Wet Locations. All luminaires installed in damp locations shall be marked Suitable for Wet Locations or Suitable for Damp Locations.. Conductors in vertical poles used as raceway shall be supported as provided in 300.19. Part XII. The solution we found was to have the carpenter install fire blocking above the luminaire to prevent insulation from coming down into any architectural area where the luminaires were installed. Construction. within 900 mm (3 ft.) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft.) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. It is part of the National Fire Code series published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a private trade association. 410.56 Protection of Conductors and Insulation. All wiring must be in rigid conduit or threaded steel intermediate metal conduit and will need to have seal fittings installed per 501.15 (A). Equipment other than showcases shall not be electrically connected to showcases. The ballast of a fluorescent luminaire installed indoors shall have integral thermal protec tion. Simple Reactance Ballasts. There are two specific locations I want to cover in this article. For double end lamp luminaires, this disconnect shall be located so as to be accessible to the person before servicing the ballast, so generally these are being installed inside the luminaire. Transformers shall be installed as near to the lamps as practicable to keep the secondary conduc tors as short as possible. NEC Section 410.130(F)(5) This article covers luminaires, portable lumin aires, lampholders, pendants, incandescent filament lamps, arc lamps, electric-discharge lamps, decorative lighting products, lighting accessories for temporary seasonal and holiday use, portable flexible lighting products, and the wiring and equip ment forming part of such products and lighting installations. Disconnection. Autotransformers. Many of the items have been created directly as a result of disaster conditions through history. The term luminaires is recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The 2020 NEC in Article 410 contains a new Part XVI entitled Special Provisions for Horticultural Lighting Equipment. You probably guessedit is the last item in Article 410, and it states that holiday lighting shall be in accordance with Article 590.3(B). Adjacent to Combustible Materials. In indoor locations other than dwellings and associated accessory structures, fluorescent luminaires that utilize double-ended lamps and contain ballast(s) that can be serviced in place shall have a disconnecting means either inter nal or external to each luminaire. The means for providing illumination has gone through numerous changes over the centuries, from oil lamps to incandescent bulbs, to fluorescent tubes and LEDs. Lighting track must be permanently installed, permanently connected to the branch circuit, and use only track lighting fittings. Where the disconnecting means is external to the luminaire, it shall be a single device, and shall be attached to the luminaire or the luminaire shall be located within sight of the disconnecting means. If you install any electrical wiring or equipment in, or adjacent to, bodies of water not covered by other Articles in the NEC, the installation must conform to Article 682 [682.1]. Installation. General. Lumin aires with exposed metal parts shall be provided with a means for connecting an equipment grounding conductor for such luminaires. While it may be possible to list them together, I havent seen a fixture that is listed for another manufacturers trims. Recessed lighting is an item I emphasize as one of the most important items for inspections. Fastening. Since the closet doors are generally closed, if the fixture is left on and overheats items in the closet, the resulting fire could go unnoticed for quite some time. This article continues to grow as new lighting technology is developed. There is a concern that the lamps may fail in such a way that debris may fall onto people or combustible surfaces. Recessed Remote Ballasts. Lets examine the requirements of the NEC, IES, and other standards. An autotransformer that is used to raise the voltage to more than 300 volts, as part of a ballast for supplying lighting units, shall be supplied only by a grounded system. of a ballast, LED driver, power supply, or transformer shall have an insulation temperature rating not lower than 90C (194F), unless supplying a luminaire marked as suitable for a different insulation temperature. Thermal protection shall not be required in a recessed high-intensity luminaire whose design, construction, and thermal performance characteristics are equivalent to a thermally protected luminaire and are identi fied as inherently protected. Luminaires shall be securely fastened to the ceiling framing member by mechanical means such as bolts, screws, or rivets. Introductioin to the National Electrical Code. The housing for the lighting track system shall be of substantial construction to maintain rigidity. 410.84 Cord Bushings. A toggle bolt pushed through a lay-in ceiling tile will likely not be adequate. For existing installed lumin aires without disconnecting means, at the time a ballast is replaced, a disconnecting means shall be installed. Luminaires installed in wet or damp locations shall be installed such that water cannot enter or accumulate in wiring compartments, lampholders, or other electrical parts. Insulating Joints. General-purpose electrical equipment includes heaters, switches, receptacles, and cords. One additional 2-wire branch circuit separately supplying one or more of the connected luminaires shall also be permit ted. As we mentioned earlier, we have a definition for closet storage space. The electrical service equipment b. However, the requirements within this article are important to know and enforce. Several codes regulate the use of artificial lighting. This includes cables, conductors, wiring devices, and others. Transformers of the Oil-Filled Type. 410.93 Double-Pole Switched Lampholders. Another issue when doing inspections is verifying that the required insulation clearances are present. Pendant lampholders with permanently attached leads, where used for other than festoon wiring, shall be hung from separate stranded rubber-covered conductors that are soldered directly to the circuit conductors but suppor ted independently thereof. Lamps or lampholders shall be designed so that there are no exposed live parts when lamps are being inserted or removed. Equipment schedules are important, and one should ask for an equipment schedule during the plan review process, to make sure of what is taking place inside the extraction room and also the surrounding areas. Lampholders of the screw shell type shall be installed for use as lampholders only. In a completed installa tion, each outlet box shall be provided with a cover unless covered by means of a luminaire canopy, lampholder, recepta cle, or similar device. Connection of utilization equipment to facilitate frequent interchange. Access to Boxes. Lamp tie wires, mount ing screws, clips, and decorative bands on glass spaced at least 38 mm (112in.) Marking. (A) Definition. Such luminaires shall be permitted to have an additional guard. Luminaires that have exposed ballasts, transformers, LED drivers, or power supplies shall be installed such that ballasts, transformers, LED drivers, or power supplies shall not be in contact with combustible material unless listed for such condition. Auxiliary equipment, including reactors, capacitors, resistors, and similar equipment, where not instal led as part of a luminaire assembly, shall be enclosed in accessi ble, permanently installed metal cabinets. However, the requirements within this article are important to know and enforce. Provided with Mogul-Base, Screw Shell Lampholders. . This becomes a challenge because insulation has the tendency to go everywhere if it is blown in; or if it is batt insulation, it may eventually fall onto a fixture. Heavy-duty lighting track is lighting track identified for use exceeding 20 amperes. Electrical Level 1 - Chapter 26105-14. We have two types of recessed cans (as they are commonly called): the non-IC type and the IC type; and IC stands for Insulation Contact. from the sides and back of the closet walls, respectively, and continuing vertically to the closet ceiling parallel to the walls at a horizontal distance of 300 mm (12 in.) These connectors are required to be listed and be of the locking or latching type. Luminaires shal be securely fastened to the ceiling framing member by mechanical means such as bolts, scres, or rivits. or exceeds 400 mm (16 in.) Metal or nonmetallic poles shall be permitted to be used to support luminaires and as a raceway to enclose supply conductors, provided the following conditions are met: A pole shall have a handhole not less than 50 mm 100 mm (2 in. between the first case and the supply receptacle. These are very commonly used in residential construction and are a very important part of the residential inspection process. Luminaires that use a metal halide lamp other than a thick-glass parabolic reflector lamp (PAR) shall be provided with a containment barrier that encloses the lamp, or shall be provided with a physical means that only allows the use of a lamp that is Type O.Informational Note: See ANSI Standard C78.389, General. nec article 410 contains requirements for installing nec article 410 contains requirements for installing Receptacles, Connectors, and Attachment Plugs. Part XII Special Provisions for Electric-Discharge Lighting System of 1000 Volts or Less includes 410.130(G) Disconnecting Means. Then, if you see something that just doesnt look right during an inspection, you will know where to go to verify the code requirements. Temperature Limit of Conductors in Outlet Boxes. Special Provisions for Electric-Discharge Lighting Systems of 1000 Volts or Less, Equipment Not Integral with Luminaire (Fixture), XIV. Since most poles are metallic, you absolutely have to make this inspection to insure they are grounded. The vertical location of the kitchen countertop receptacles is addressed in 210.52 (C) (5); they are not permitted more than 20 inches above the countertop. All luminaires shall be marked with the maxi mum lamp wattage or electrical rating, manufacturers name, trademark, or other suitable means of identification. The luminaires shall be marked for dc operation. Recessed Incandescent Luminaires. Decorative lighting and similar accessories used for holiday lighting and similar purposes, in accordance with 590.3(B), shall be listed. Luminaires shall not be used as a raceway for circuit conductors unless they comply with 410.64(A), (B), or (C). All luminaires installed in wet locations shall be marked, "Suitable for Wet Locations." These poles are likely to be touched by the general public, and if a fault occurs a person could be seriously injured or killed. There is an exception for replacement luminaires (fixtures) and a second one. These changes can be found in Article 690, Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems. Accessible. Separately mounted ballasts, trans formers, LED drivers, or power supplies that are listed for direct connection to a wiring system shall not be required to be additionally enclosed. If they were installed in a ceiling, we had the installer frame a box out around the fixtures to maintain the required 3 inch clearance from insulation. Surface-mounted luminaires (fixtures) can be installed on the wall above the door or on the ceiling. Fixtures and lampholders must be securely supported. Luminaire Types Not Permitted. Only luminaires of the following types shall be permitted in a closet: Surface-mounted or recessed incandescent or LED luminaires with completely enclosed light sources, Surface-mounted or recessed fluorescent luminaires, Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires identi fied as suitable for installation within the closet storage space. However, in locations such as small alcoves or similar areas where 4 inch cans are installed, we may find problems. Luminaire Stems. Framing members of suspended ceil ing systems used to support luminaires shall be securely fastened to each other and shall be securely attached to the building structure at appropriate intervals.
